Blogging Bishops

AFTER only a decade since its creation in 1991, the weblog or “blog,” the web-based journal service, has not only been the alternative medium for youthful outbursts and views. The ubiquitous online journal has, of late, become the new pulpit for the country’s prelates.

Following the late Pope John Paul II’s call to use modern media and technology for evangelization, six Filipino Catholic bishops are making the Internet an integral part of their mission.

Security woes still on

IN THE WAKE of the recent spate of theft incidents at the multi-deck parking Bldg., Thomasians should be more cautious rather than be alarmed about security on campus.

UST Safety and Security Services (UST-SSS) detachment commander Clemente Dingayan advised Thomasians to be more vigilant in attending to their things.

“Anywhere in UST is still safe, even at the pay park building,” Dingayan said. “Nevertheless, students should not be complacent and rely heavily on the security guards.”

Car park on the rise

A MALL within the University?

Not exactly. But the newly constructed car park does stand out with a very postmodern architecture in a very classic school. What was once an inconspicuous two-story concrete compound is now a semi-commercial site bustling with people.

The renovated car park with all its food kiosks and more parking space may be a welcome sight for some people, but it has also been the subject of criticism and queries from students and faculty members.

Bogus stem cell paper exposed

South Korean cloning pioneer Woo Suk Hwang’s landmark research on human cloning and stem cell were fabricated, an investigation by a Seoul National University panel revealed.

“We found out that Hwang’s team faked it by splitting the patient’s body cells into two test tubes when they submitted the samples, so the two types of data were bound to be identical,” panel spokesman Jung-Hye Roh told reporters.

German biologist lectures in UST

“Information on the function of floral traits and the pollinators is often missing,” said a German biologist in a lecture about developmental problems in pollination of interrelated flowers last January 9 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.

Dr. Ulrich Meve, a professor of the Department of Plant Systematics from Bayreuth University in Bavaria, Germany, explained the several aspects on the systematics of Apocynaceae-Asclepiadoideae plants.

UST Cedres: Mixing the right formula

Towards the end of 2005, UST Center for Drug Research, Evaluation, and Studies (UST-Cedres), dubbed as the country’s most advanced pharmaceutical research center, has opened its doors to international clients from South America, Bangladesh, and Asean countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, to serve the needs of both the academe and pharmaceutical industry for drug research, evaluation, and studies.

BUDGET Director Florita Faundo-Aguiling retired from her administrative post after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65 last Jan. 20. She retired from teaching in the College of Commerce last year.

“I don’t regret serving the University most of my life,” said a teary-eyed Aguiling in a surprise tribute at the Conservator of Music recital hall.
