The dreaded academic thesis

THE LAST time I entered the 7-11 store on Dapitan to get a slurpee and replenishments for my bathroom cabinet, I overheard two guys talking about what to get their girlfriends. In 7-11? Well, they do call it a convenience store, and sure enough, stacked on a shelf next to the personal accessories section were red heart-shaped balloons and faux flowers. Apparently, they were not good enough—hence the argument.

And so it begins…

“Ninety percent of the politicians give the other ten percent a bad reputation.” - Henry Kissinger

DESPICABLE.

Such is an adjective proper to describe the present political situation of the country. Politics will always be politics and as what my history teacher back in grade school used to say, “in politics, there are no permanent allies, only permanent interests.”

Patuloy ba tayong magbulag-bulagan?

In the name of the mother?

IS THERE such a thing as feminist theology? If God were a woman, would there have been female apostles too? If there is God the Father, is there also God the Mother?

In the symposium “The Cult of Dios Ina as an Ersatz Theology” last Jan. 17 at the UST Seminary, Rev. Fr. Ramon Salibay, O.P. explained the growing feminist theology, its beliefs and its teachings.

‘V’ alumni hold key gov’t positions

TWO FORMER Varsitarian staff members are now holding key government positions.

President Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed former Varsitarian news editor Heraclio Celesteno “Rocky” Nazareno press undersecretary.

Nazareno graduated from the University with a BSC Business Administration degree in 1988. He was also the Commerce Journal editor in chief from 1986-87.

Prior to his Malacañang appointment, Nazareno was a senior reporter at the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Cloning strikes anew

SHOULD Saddam Hussein be killed and cloned the next day, would there be an end to terror?

This is just one of the many questions bugging the world after the second cloned baby was born, as claimed by Rael, founder of Clonaid, the first human cloning company in the world. A former French journalist and car-racer, Rael claims to have cloned another human from a lesbian couple in Netherlands.

Clean air hazards

Automobiles contribute the largest to the smoke concentration in the atmosphere, discharging several hazardous air pollutants, among them :

Nitrogen Oxides - produced whenever fuel is burned, these emissions contribute to the formation of photochemical smog and acid rain.

Hydrocarbons - contains hydrogen and carbon atoms and are present in the combustion product of fossil fuels, causing photochemical smog. HC emissions are released from motor vehicle exhaust and are usually the result of unburned or partially burned fuel.

The air we breathe

WHAT’s with the recent hullabaloo in the transport sector against the Clean Air Act? Who doesn’t want clean air epecially in the ill-stricken atmosphere of Manila?

The Clean Air Act (Republic Act 8749) stirred not only the public that has been clamoring for its over due implementation, but also the ever-confused legislature that passed this bill. On the one hand, the implementation of the law has been stalled since the start. On the other, the transport sector, which is responsible for 70% of the accumulated air pollution index, is opposed to the act.

What’s your type?

DIABETES has reached epidemic proportions in Asia and continues to rise at an alarming rate. Surprisingly, the youth are not spared.

Barely three months after undergoing fasting blood sugar (FBS) tests, Nursing senior Aileen Vanity Navalta was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. FBS measures glucose after a patient drinks a glucose solution and fast for eight to 12 hours. Her fate was expected since her family has a genetic history of the disease. Add this to her retroactive lifestyle and bad diet. “I have a sweet tooth. Eat all I can everyday!” Navalta exclaimed.
