Education researcher in Honolulu

A CENTER for Education and Research Development (CERD) researcher encouraged more research utilization and evaluation to improve educational practices of countries in the recent Hawaii International Conference on Education at the Sheraton Hotel in Honolulu last month.

During her paper presentation, “Toward a High Impact Research Undertaking: A Synergy of Utilization and Evaluation”, Dr. Emily Tan explained how strengthening the evaluation system of research outputs improves educational delivery modes of schools and ensure its effectiveness.

Ethics courses up for revision

FATHER Rector Tamerlane Lana, O.P. expects full cooperation from the deans in reviewing and revising Ethics courses in the University through the Center for Contextualized Theology and Ethics (CCTE).

In his speech during the presentation of the Center to the different colleges last Dec. 10, Fr. Lana said he hopes that the deans would be involved in revising the ethics courses.

Collared thief escapes UST guards

A bag lifter escaped from the custody of the University’s security force a few hours after he was caught stealing from a Faculty of Pharmacy student at the Santissimo Rosario Chapel last Jan. 16, the UST Office for Security Affairs (OSA) reported.

UST security personnel collared Raul Rasunta of San Mateo, Rizal as he was about to leave the chapel. Recovered from Rasunta was student Catherine Anne Ingles’ purse and calculator and a black wallet containing pictures of his victims.

DOLE exec calls for Catholic social justice

DEPARTMENT of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Assistant Secretary Ma. Antoinette Allones challenged Thomasians to practice the ideals of Pope Leo XIII in easing labor tensions in the country and promoting good working environment.

Allones stressed the importance of justice, respect, and Christian morality in the labor sector during the 9th Pope Leo XIII Lecture entitled “Rerum Novarum in the Context of the Current Labor Situation in the Philippines” at the Medicine Auditorium last Jan. 17.

Justice system to be reformed

SUPREME Court (SC) Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Jr. urged Thomasians to follow the ideals of St. Thomas More in promoting justice in the country.

Davide emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability and impartiality in the judicial system during the 35th St. Thomas More Lecture at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex last Feb. 7.

According to Davide, Filipinos must be inspired by the dedication of St. Thomas More in serving the people.

“It is the duty of every good man to be of service to his country,” Davide said.

Former Rector emphasizes respect for individuality

FORMER UST Rector Rev. Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. emphasized respect for individuality during the Mass commemorating the feast day of the University’s patron saint St. Thomas Aquinas last Jan. 27 at the UST Chapel.

According to Fr. de la Rosa, every person is created with uniqueness and individuality.

“The recent World Meeting of Families unites us under one family, with one God our Father, yet each of us is different from one another. God created us not as families, but as individuals,” he said.

Faculty members honored for years of service

THREE professors were given the Gawad Santo Tomas for Outstanding Faculty/Researchers during the Fifth Annual Dangal Awards at the Medicine Auditorium last Feb. 5.

Dr. Minerva Calimag from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (Medicine) was recognized for her outstanding performance in Science and Technology, Dr. Emily Tan from the Faculty of Pharmacy in Social Science, and conductor Herminigildo Ranera for Performing Arts.

Germany honors UST prof

GERMAN President Johannes Rau conferred Germany’s highest award on the University’s longest teaching non-Dominican priest last Jan. 25 at the UST Graduate School (UST-GS).

Fr. Hermogenes Bacareza, SVD received the Grobes Bundesverdienstkreuz or the Insignia of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, for his “extraordinary value in fostering friendly relations between the Philippines and Germany.”

“At least my service for Germany and the Philippines was appreciated. However, it is not for me, its all for God,” Fr. Bacareza said.

Pharmacy aims for Level III accreditation in three months

BARRING last-minute hurdles, the Faculty of Pharmacy’s two programs may reach Level 3 accreditation in three months, Pharmacy Dean Dr. Rosalinda Solevilla said.

“(The accreditation) will also contribute to the University profile. (The Faculty) will be consistent with the University’s 2011 goal that all programs must (have) at least Level 3 (accreditation),” she added.

‘Lead by example,’ youth urged

PRESIDENTIAL daughter Evangeline “Luli” Arroyo urged the youth to lead by example during the first World Youth Union-Philippines (WYU) forum at the Thomas Aquinas Research Auditorium last Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

Arroyo recounted her grandfather’s and mother’s rise to the presidency and their leadership toward good government.
