Usapang halalan

Guide to voting in the automated election

THERE’S no stopping automated counting for the national elections this year.

Allaying fears of a “back to manual” election, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed confidence that the first nationwide fully automated elections would take place with no glitches on May 10.

But given the new technology, critics are skeptical whether automated counting would ensure clean and honest elections. Comelec appears to be convinced that everything is in place.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said voting in an automated election involves “quick and easy” steps that would only take five to seven minutes.

Philo prof receives first ‘festschrift’

UST’S very own philosopher, “Venerable Master” Alfredo Co, has reached another milestone—he’s the first scholar on campus to receive a tribute in the rare form of a “festschrift.”

A collection of writings by different authors in his honor, the seven-volume compilation titled “Across the Philosophical Silk Road: A Festschrift in Honor of Alfredo P. Co” was launched last December 10 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.

“The [festschrift given to the honoree] is an embodiment of an intellectual journey, solid scholarship, passionate study, and a voice to the Asian question,” said Joyce Arriola, chair of the department of Humanities.

Dame of Philippine couture

JAN. 28, 1920—Philippine fashion almost lost a prolific daughter when fashion designer Salvacion Lim Higgins nearly died at birth. She was, in fact, pronounced dead minutes afterward.

But thanks to a Chinese relative, Salvacion was saved and was to live 70 more fruitful years, most of which were dedicated to the superb craftsmanship and sophistication of the Philippine vogue.

“Slim,” as Salvacion would later be known, was the founder in 1960 of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School, the first and oldest fashion school in the country.

Iconic artworks

AN EXHIBIT at the Santisimo Rosario Parish is seeking to promote family unity with images of the Holy Family.

Titled “Jesus, Maria y Josep,” the exhibit is a visual reminder of the values of love, filial respect, belongingness, and harmony in the home, as well as childlike values like piety and humility. The exhibit, which runs until the end of January, is also a celebration of the feasts of the Holy Family and the Sto. Niño.

“This is to remind the obligation of parents and their children to each other,” said Fr. Franklin Beltran, O.P., project chair and parish priest of the Santisimo Rosario Parish. “Also, not only the parishioners will be aware [of the Feast of Sto. Niño], but also the student body,” he added.

Pope opens 2010 with a call for peace

POPE Benedict XVI opened 2010 with a message of peace, calling on people to respect their neighbor and shun discrimination.

“Meditating on the mystery of the Face of God, and on the human face is a privileged path that leads to peace,” he said in his homily last January 1 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Santisimo Rosario Parish priest Fr. Franklin Beltran, O.P., explained that since man is made in God’s image, he must be conscientious enough to fulfill what God wants him to do to attain peace.

Beltran noted that societal hierarchies and differences in religion hinder people from respecting one another as one tends to consider his or her religion as “number one” in terms of the supremacy of their God.

Photographers shoot for education’s sake

PHOTOS do not only serve to stimulate the sense of vision, but they can also be effective tools to raise awareness about social issues.

This was the purpose behind the Camiguin Norte Mission: Babuyan Islands exhibit, which ran from December 14 to 19 at the UST Main Building lobby. The exhibit was made up of photographs by six photographers -- Mon Corpuz, Gari Buenavista, Rolly Magpayo, A.G.Saño, Romeo Remalante, and Razcel Salvarita -- during an unforgettable trip to Camiguin Norte, a Dominican mission outpost in the Babuyan Islands. While there, the six learned about the problems, particularly in education, that children of the residents faced, and decided to help raise awareness about them.

Isang taon
