Seeing through eyes down under

Pilipinas Loud and Clear, a month-long exhibit at the Australian Center in Paseo de Roxas, Makati City features works of Australian artists Jenny Sanzaro and Rowena Friemann. The works are products of their three-month stay here in the Philippines.

Spiritual makeover


Once, I accompanied a friend at a posh mall for her usual shopping spree. We came across endless lines of fashion boutiques - from clothing stores sporting Italian collections to make-up basics and assorted nail tints. Unaccustomed to these addictions, I watched this impulsive shopper with ardent interest as she selected the items without even bothering to check the tag price.

Holy See to Abu: Make peace

The Holy See?s Secretary of State urged Catholic leaders to work for peace and unity in the face of religious-inspired violence like the Abu Sayaff terrorism in Mindanao.

?Walk hand in hand to build channels of fraternity (and) in building a beautiful world which to live and to work,? said Archbishop Jean Louis-Tauran during a meeting with religious leaders at the Apostolic Nunciature in Taft, Manila. The meeting was part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the country?s relations with the Vatican last June 4.

Pope elevates 4 Italians, Lebanese to sainthood

POPE JOHN Paul II canonized four Italians and a Lebanese in a solemn ceremony in celebration of Trinity Sunday last June 10, as he set a record of 451 canonizations in his 23-year pontificate.

The Holy Father granted sainthood to Blesseds Luigi Scrosoppi, Agostino Roscelli, Bernardo da Corleone, Teresa Eustochio Verzeri, and Rafqa Petra Choboq Ar-Rayes, Lebanon?s first native saint, at the St. Peter?s Square in front of 30,000 faithful ? 10,000 of them from Lebanon.

Heart can repair itself, US experts say

A team of scientists from the New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York found evidence of cell division in damaged cardiac muscles.

The cardiological breakthrough published in the June 7 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine contradicts the theory of the irreversibility of the damages of cardiac muscle cells, say after a heart attack.

Cat games released soon

CATS may soon be clawing their way to computer games.

CyberPounce, a computer game designed for cats, may be the first software catering to animals, an Associated Press report said.

Los Angeles-based game designer Matt Wolf created this software, which features running mice, a buzzing fly, flapping birds, and a bubble-blowing fish which the cat players can prey on using a keyboard and mouse.

Blind can now ‘see’ space

THE WONDERS of the universe may now be seen by the blind.

The book called ?Touch the Universe? created by astronomer Noreen Grice and educator Benning Wentworth gives the visually-impaired a chance to discover space through photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The unique features of this book are its plastic overlays, which will aid the visually-impaired in imagining outer space.

The contents of the book include pictures of the Ring Nebula, Eskimo Nebula and close-up images of Saturn and Jupiter.

UST singers kick off world tour with “Museo Musica”

THE UST Singers once more left a captivated their Thomasian audience with an astounding and high-level performance before an upcoming tour that kicked off June 25.

Seemingly giving a glimpse of their concert tour selection, the UST Singers? ?Museo Musica,? under the baton of Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang Jr., was a feast of Thomasian talent and ingenuity.

The songs consisted of sacred classical music, Kundiman, international spiritual pieces and excerpts from musicals Nine and Miss Saigon.

Who’s the accomplice?

REPERTORY Philippines ended its 62nd theatrical season with the impressive staging of Accomplice.

The play, directed by Miguel Faustmann, is a two-act comic thriller written by Rupert Holmes. It ran earlier this month at the Carlos P. Romulo Theatre of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation Plaza(RCBC) in Makati.
