Artlets reinforces Korean connection

ACADEMIC links were reinforced between UST and South Korea’s Chungnam National University as their faculty members discussed social welfare policies and environmental concerns last June 23 at the Artlets Audio-Visual room.

Professors from the two universities presented dissertations relevant to Korean and Filipino societies.

Korean professor Do-Lim Choi discussed the merit system used by the Korean government to give just compensation to its laborers.

Medical artifacts to get new home

AFTER years of being stuck in the stockroom collecting dust, the UST medical artifacts will now be displayed in a home of its own.

According to Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Regent Fr. Jerry Manlangit, O.P., the Faculty plans to construct a new museum in the second floor of the St. Martin de Porres Bldg. this year “to save the medical legacy of the University from deterioration and neglect.”

Drunken students held

THREE College of Commerce freshmen were caught exhibiting drunken behavior in front of the St. Raymund’s Building when they attempted to attend their afternoon classes at around 2 p.m. last July 2.

This reporter saw the students, one female and two males, walking in a drunken state to the lobby. The female became hysterical that attracted the attention of the students in the area.

USTFU receives much awaited benefits

UST Faculty Union (USTFU) executive vice-president Rene Luis Tadle announced the distribution of some P2.4 million to the teachers as part of their share from the tuition increase of 2000 to 2002 during the faculty assembly last July 15.

Tadle explained the delay was caused by some difficulties in the accounting and proportioning of the amount. Each faculty member would receive an average of P1.64 per unit, multiplied by 53 months (AY 2000-2001 to present), depending on the teaching load and professorial status.

Educ, Archi students reap honors

COLLEGE of Education students reaped top awards during the 30th Food and Nutrition Research Institute seminar last July 6 and 7 in Bicutan, Taguig.

Nutrition and Dietetics senior Elaine Quirante placed first at the Nutrition quiz bee, while Food Technology graduates Wynvie Lee, Jesusa Grace Bantug, Rosette Dela Cruz, and Michelle Manuel took second place in the undergraduate student research competition with their study “Utilization of Chicken Blood in the Fortification of Hotdog with Vitamin A, Calcium, and Iron.”

UST says no to cell phone ban

CONTRARY to a television report, UST did not forge a pact with other major universities in banning cell phones to prevent the further spread of student gambling, said UST Student Welfare Development Board director Cresencio Doma.

“We cannot simply ban cell phones in the campus,” Doma said. “It is significant as far as students’ security is concerned. Banning it is a form of deprivation on the students.”

Cell phones were apparently suspected as medium for the now rampant student gambling especially in private schools and universities, including UST.

Journalese goes online

THE UST Journalism Society (Journ Soc) of the Faculty of Arts and Letters has joined the online trend as the Society released the first online issue of the Journalese, its official publication, last July 26.

According to Deni Rose Afinidad, editor in chief, the Journalese, shifted to an online publication due to lack of funds and irregular distribution. She added that the shift would allow it to increase frequently.

Engineering is most populated college

THE FACULTY of Engineering has become the most populated college of the University, dislodging the College of Commerce.

Data from the Registrar’s office showed the Faculty now has 4,003 students, an increase of 864 students from last year’s 3,319. The increase is attributable to the transfer of Information Technology courses to the Faculty from the College of Science.
