THERE is just something about commencement exercises that leaves a lot of people in tears.

IPEA director nabs ‘thieves’

SOMETIMES, fanatics do bizarre things to be close to the person they admire.

Last March 8, two bumbling College of Science students were apprehended after they tried to steal the picture of their “dream girl.”

The students took the picture of beauty queen cum-fencer-Justine Gabionza, but were unaware that Institute of Physical Education (IPEA) and Athletics director Fr. Emerito de Sagon, O.P. was just nearby.

Fr. de Sagon immediately called their attention. The two students were surprised upon seeing the IPEA director.

Tubong Bocaue, Bulacan, nagsimula si Bautista bilang instructor sa College of Commerce. Naging pinuno siya ng kagawaran ng accounting at naging CPA review director matapos ang ilang taon. Bago siya nagretiro noong 1982, nanilbihan siya bilang assistant dean ng kolehiyo.

People’s Congress tackles land issues

PEOPLE’S Congress, a research network composed of UST and other local universities, is now ready to present to Congress a legislative agenda on different land issues.

The lobby effort is the product of a conference held last March 3, where the research group presented five cases to the members and a government representative, Assistant sSecretary Milo Ibudo, Jr. of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Special Concerns.

Thesis not the reason for suicide

CONTRARY to reports, the UST Architecture student who committed suicide last month did not do so because he failed his thesis subject.

According to Marina Raner, mother of Architecture senior Mariano Raner IV, her son was not even taking his thesis subject.

Raner IV was found dead last Feb. 9 inside his parents’ room. He apparently shot himself with his father’s gun.

Mrs. Raner said there could be several reasons for the suicide.

Science Regent urges voters to seek St. Thomas’ guidance

COLLEGE of Science Regent Fr. Pompeyo de Mesa, O.P. said St. Thomas Aquinas can guide voters in choosing government leaders during the lecture series “St. Thomas on Good Governance” at the UST Medicine Auditorium last month.

“In his writings, St. Thomas also enumerated the ways on achieving peace through the types of governance. He was most favorable with the rule of one, or the monarchy, where one can more efficaciously bring about unity than a group of several,” he said.

Fr. de Mesa also urged students to know St. Thomas Aquinas more.

Non-academic employees feted

Three outstanding non-academic employees were honored by the University last month at the Santissimo Rosario Parish Church.

Jose Baldin, driver for the Treasurer’s Office since 1960; laboratory assistant Domingo Labog of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery; and Josephine Mariano of the Accounting Department were each given plaques, cash prizes, and P4,000 worth of tokens during the Non-Academic Employees Recognition Day.

New home for Archi, CFAD inaugurated

FATHER Rector Tamerlane Lana, O.P. expressed optimism that with the new Beato Angelico Bldg., the College of Architecture (CA) and College of Fine Arts (CFAD) would even more achieve academic excellence.

During the inauguration of the building last Feb. 18, Fr. Lana told the Varsitarian that the University hopes that the new facilities would aid the colleges’ endeavors.

UST shines in board exams

THE UNIVERSITY continued to dominate professional licensure examinations with several Thomasians topping the Architecture and the Physical and Occupational Therapy boards last January and February.

A Thomasian placed first in the Physical Therapy board exams.

Dominador Ayeras III registered an 85.80 per cent rating to lead the 10 Thomasians who passed the PT board exams.

In addition, the University ranked third overall with a 91 per cent passing rate (10 out of 11 examinees).

Former senator leads TOTAL recipients

FORMER Senator Victor Ziga led the batch of 13 distinguished UST alumni who were recognized in this year’s The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni (Total) Awards last March 7 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.

The Total Award is conferred on UST graduates “who have excelled in their respective fields and exemplified Thomasian ideals of moral values and committed service to society.”
