RP-US ties celebrated in UST
PICTURES depicting the long friendship that Filipinos and Americans historically shared were shown in a traveling photo exhibit launched at the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences last May 3.
The event, attended by UST Rector Fr. Ernesto Arceo, O.P, dignitaries from the United States Embassy, officers of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and presidents of various universities in Manila, commemorated the 60th anniversary of Filipino-American friendship.
UST gets low CE, ME exam results
THE UNIVERSITY registered a lower performance for the Civil Engineering (CE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME) professional licensure examinations held last April and May, respectively.
The University’s passing rate in the CE board dropped to 88 per cent from last year’s 94 per cent as seven of the eight Thomasians who took the exams passed. Six of them were first-time takers.
The national passing rate also dropped from 44.37 per cent last year to 33.19 per cent this year as 914 out of the 2,754 examinees passed.
Benipayo pleased with bar results
FACULTY of Civil Law Dean Alfredo Benipayo said he is satisfied with the performance of Thomasian examinees who hurdled the 2006 Bar Exams with a higher passing rate compared to last year’s.
“Considering that more examiners took the test this year, the passing rate should have gone down but it went up still,” Benipayo said. “The figure speaks for itself; I am satisfied with the performance of the new Thomasian lawyers.”
Although no Thomasian landed in the Top 10, Benipayo said that what matters more is the number of examinees who passed.
A fair and square fairy tale
NOT ALL fairy tales need to be mushy.
The hodgepodge of historical brutality and mind-boggling creatures in Pan’s Labyrinth successfully transcends the average once-upon-a-time narrative into a classic masterpiece. Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro brews bits of mythology, history, and fantasy in this internationally acclaimed film.
Crackers
WHENEVER I repeated a word my master said, I got a cracker. This was how things worked for me ever since I started living in my master’s house. I never liked the taste of crackers. Dried-up bark would probably taste better. But ever since I was placed in a cage, I didn’t really have much of a choice anymore when it came to the food I eat. Before, I was free to search for my own food, usually the nectar, pollen, or fruits in the forest.
Danny Sillada’s parable of many talents
HE WAS a Thomasian seminarian until he discovered his multiple callings as a corporate officer and a multimedia artist in the dynamic world of poetry, painting, and performance art.
Instead of wearing stole and cassock, Sacred Theology graduate Danny Sillada now sports his trademark sultana, red shoes and shades worn during his live art performances.
“People always ask why I decided to become a full-time artist. But art has been a part of myself since I was a kid,” he said.
Freedom forever
SPEAKING from memory and skilled imagination, 16-time Palanca award recipient and Philippine Star columnist Jose Dalisay, Jr. gives another compelling retelling of one of the country’s tempestuous epochs—Martial Law.
