GMA attends UST Singers concert

FOLLOWING tradition, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo graced the internationally acclaimed UST Singers’ homecoming concert at the Philam Life Auditorium last Sept. 9.

The UST Singers had performed for former President and UST alumnus Diosdado Macapagal and for First Lady Evangelina Macaraeg-Macapagal in 1997, and for former President Fidel Ramos in 1996.

The concert titled Per Sempre was the first concert attended by the President since she assumed office in January.

Thomasians bag art awards

A THOMASIAN won first place in the “ArtPetron: The 1st National Student Art Competition” held last Aug. 22 at the Petron Mega Plaza, Makati City.

With the theme “Lumang Laro, Bagong Likha,” the entries depicted children playing traditional Filipino games through watercolor and oil.

An Industrial Design sophomore at the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD), Yveese Belen landed first for her work “Piko: Alay Kay Mahal.” She was also a semi-finalist in the oil category for “Kalabaw Naming si Puti.”

University fetes faculty members for years of service

EDUCATION Secretary Raul S. Roco paid tribute to the teaching profession during the annual Dangal ng UST Awards last Aug. 28 at the UST Medicine Cinematorium. The awards honored 86 teachers for their outstanding performance and loyal service to the University.

“Being a Filipino teacher requires more fortitude than teaching in other lands. To convert law into an internal value, to convert values into actuality — in biblical terms, to convert the word into flesh ¯ that is a teacher’s job,” Roco said.

CPT is now College of Rehabilitation and Science

THE COLLEGE of Physical Therapy has changed its name to the College of Rehabilitation Science in a bid to improve its academic image.

According to Dean Consuelo Suarez, the change will correct the impression that the College only offers Physical Therapy.

Aside from Physical Therapy, the college also offers Occupational Therapy. It plans to offer Speech Pathology and Sports Science next schoolyear.

UST wins advertising award

THE UNIVERSITY outclassed four other universities in the Marketing Communication Awards given by the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA) at the Manila Hotel last Sept. 8.

UST’s team won first place for its marketing case study. The team was composed of Communication Arts seniors Josephine Burns, Maricon Garcia and Hera Sanchez, with adviser Prof. Bong Osorio of the Department of Communication of the Faculty of Arts and Letters; and advertising juniors Jeffrey Almario, and Jophine Quinto, with adviser Christy Que of the College of Fine Arts and Design.

Med Freshmen critique new learning method

The freshmen of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery have voiced their concerns about the new Problem Based Learning (PBL) method.

In the letter to Dean Dr. Angeles Tan-Alora, the four freshmen class presidents— Joanne Punsalan, John Hubert Pua, Richard Lim, and Margaret Olalia— suggested remedies to their problems.

Resigned dean still plans to teach in Archi

DESPITE his formal resignation as College of Architecture (CA) Dean last Aug. 28, Arch. Luis Ferrer still intends to teach in the University.

Last July, Ferrer resigned after rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O. P. allowed the changing of the grade of a debarred student from a five to an incomplete, that consequently paved the way for the his re-entry into the college.

However, CA Asst. Dean Arch. Tobias Bonaobra Bonaobra did not give any reason for Ferrer’s decision.

Journ Soc: SOCC ‘trashed’ exhibit

FOR REMOVING an exhibit of the UST Journalism Society so that it could mount its own, the Student Organization Coordinating Council (SOCC) is facing accusations of manhandling an organization it is supposed to represent.
