Reform or abolish

DIFFERENT sectors have been clamoring for the abolition of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) since the murder of Mark Welson Chua, the UST Engineering student who exposed the alleged rampant corruption in the University’s program.

Various student groups have called the ROTC corrupt, irrelevant, oppressive, and senseless. They believe that students would be more productive if they would engage in community service programs.

THE LEAD witness in the Mark Welson Chua murder case recanted his testimony and said that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) officers coached him to implicate UST Reserved Officers Training Corps (UST-ROTC) administrative officers as masterminds in the killing of the Mechanical Engineering student who exposed the anomalies in the University’s military training program.

DAHIL sa mga problemang kinakaharap ng Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) ngayon, susuriin ng Varsitarian, kasama ang isang dating opisyal nito sa UST, hindi lamang ang mga pangyayaring nagaganap sa kasalukuyan. Binalik-tanawan din ang kasaysayan nito upang magkaroon ng mas malawak na pananaw tungkol sa isyu.

Sa panayam ng Varsitarian, isinalaysay ni Arch. Manuel Cueto, Cadet Adjutant ng ROTC sa UST noong 1957, ang kanyang mga karanasan. Ipinahayag niya rin ang kalungkutan ukol sa kontrobersyang kinakaharap ng ROTC.

Pagsaludo sa kasaysayan ng hukbo

SIYAM na buwan na ang nakalilipas mula nang magpuyos ang kontrobersya tungkol sa Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) sa Unibersidad. At hanggang ngayon, patuloy pa rin itong lumilikha ng ingay na siyang dahilan kung bakit higit na pinag-uusapan ang ROTC ngayon. Dahil dito, binalikan ng Varsitarian ang makulay nitong kasaysayang sa Unibersidad din nagsimula, mahigit 230 taon na ang nakalilipas.
