Stricter ID rule implemented

ONLY University of Santo Tomas Hospital (USTH) employees with green stickers on their I.D?s will be allowed to enter the hospital premises come June 11.

This was the agreement between the STUH management and the Samahang Manggagawa (SM-UST) after employees complained against a memorandum issued last month forbidding them to use the hospital?s north entrance door (facing the Medicine Building).

‘New Med program problematic’

the Problem Based Learning (PBL) system is set to be fully implemented at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery this year. But doubts continue to hound the system.
Some professors even think that there is no need to change the old system that has worked for the Medicine students. They say that PBL remains untested, its benefits ambivalent.

Humane Cities forum launched

the College of Architecture formally launched Cities 2002 last June 29 at the Roque Rua?o Building Conference Hall.
?(Our objective) is to be a stimulus for growth by showing our communities that development through a humane and sustainable manner is not only economical but achievable as well,? said Arch. Ma. Elena Cayanan, chairperson of this year?s conference.
The Second International Conference for Sustainable and Humane Cities will be held on Sept. 26 to 28 in UST.

Former ‘V’ editor third in SC essay contest

A Faculty of Civil Law sophomore landed third in the Supreme Court (SC) Centennary Essay Writing Contest sponsored by the SC and the Philippine Association of Law Schools last June 26.
A former Managing editor of the Varsitarian, Adrian Montemayor was a Journalism cum laude graduate of the Faculty of Arts and Letters.
The contest, with the theme ?The Role of the Supreme Court in a Democratic Society,? was held to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the SC.

High school council exempted from CAT, PEHM

THE UST Pay High School plans to exempt Student Council officers from attending Physical Education, Health, and Music (PEHM) classes and Citizen?s Army Training (CAT) to give them more time to organize student activities.
According to Pay High School Principal Editha Fernandez, they are concerned with the students? welfare, and would like to provide worthwhile activities for them through the Student Council.

Appeals justice is new Law dean

NEWLY-APPOINTED Faculty of Civil Law Dean Justice Jaime Lantin intends to focus on producing ?good Catholic lawyers? rather than mere Bar topnotchers during his term. Lantin says the Bar is only an ?admission for the practice of law? and passing it is not enough without ethics. ?You may be a good lawyer (but) if you have bad ethics, you?re a useless lawyer because you won?t be helping the administration of justice,? he said. Union seeks 30% wage hike, tax exemption

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas Faculty Union (USTFU) has proposed a 30-percent across-the-board salary increase for all teachers for the first year of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This would mean an increase of P5, 100 to P10, 800, depending on the rank of the faculty member.
In the proposal, the lowest rank, Instructor 1, who receives at least P17, 000 a month, will receive P22,100, while the highest ranking professor, Professor 3, now receiving a salary of P36, 000, will receive P46, 800.

Thomasians land in Asian debate top 20

THE THOMASIAN Debaters Council (TDC) landed in the top ranks among 54 other competing teams in the 8th All-Asian Inter-Varsity Universities Debate Championships at the College of Saint Benilde last month.
In the tournament, the second largest debating competition in the world, the University sent three teams and three adjudicators who advanced to the octo- finals and in the quarters after seven elimination rounds. The three teams sent by the University ranked 5th, 14th, and 16th, respectively.

University gets P3M grant, offers new scholarships

THE UNIVERSITY is offering four new scholarships for needy yet deserving students this school year.

The four new scholarships, according to Dr. Ramon Sin, Assistant to the Rector for External Affairs, are: the Antonio Jimenez Scholarship, the Eugenio Juan Regalado Gonzales Scholarship, the UST High School Foundation, and the Alexander Lacson, Jr. Memorial Foundation.

Named after an alumnus from the College of Architecture and Fine Arts, the Antonio Jimenez scholarship has an initial endowment of $25,000. The scholarship is applicable to any four-year course in the University, as long as the student hails from Jimenez’ hometown, Lubao, Pampanga.

On the other hand, the Eugenio Juan Regalado Gonzales Scholarship, named after Juan Regalado Gonzales, is a gift from his children during the College of Architecture Alumni homecoming last December. The scholarship is offered to Architecture students only.

PMA awards Thomasian doctors

TWO THOMASIAN doctors were given the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Award for their outstanding performance in Medicine during the association’s fellowship night last May 24 at the Manila Midtown Hotel.

Dr. Francisco Dizon was awarded the PMA Outstanding Professional Service Award for his exceptional performance as an internist-cardiologist.

Dizon graduated from the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in 1952 and was a faculty member of the University for 35 years.
