New UST structures alarm heritage architects

WITH so much new constructions and structural improvements within the University, can the Main Building, the defining symbol of the University, catch up?

In the “First Forum on Conservation and Re-Development of the UST Campus Towards 2011” held at the Thomas Aquinas Research Center last September 29 to 30, architects Clarissa Avendaño and Willa Solomon expressed that new buildings like the Student Center and the Alfred Velayo College of Accountancy being erected are not affirmed in the University’s campus planning.

Three Thomasian visions on the visual arts

Jaime Pacena II shows the technological determinism of the visual arts in his solo exhibit, “inBetween,” which ran at the Cubicle Art Gallery in Pasig on Sept. 23 to Oct. 23. The show was a necessary follow-through to his contributions to the group show by the Thomasian Young Artists Circle, “dog|god,” which is now on tour nationwide.

Pacena in his solo explored further the potentials of digital manipulation. The result was heightened expressionism, a marriage of expressivism and technology.

Fear factor

SOME men fear women. Some fear commitments. Some are even terrified of women overpowering them. But a different kind of fear may be unconsciously affecting the male species—femiphobia, or the fear of actually becoming a woman.

Social scientists are saying that more men are affected with this seemingly harmless trepidation without them knowing it. Surprisingly, its origins are in society’s highly patriarchal tendencies.

Indifferent

QUID quid recipitur recipitur in modu recipientur, the philosophical maxim goes. Whatever is received is received in the mode of the receiver.

The adage neatly sums up reality as seen by each one of us, through the eyes and according to the circumstances of each subject, each “I”. To word it in a very simplified manner, when one is mad, even a cheerful smile may be misread as deceitful, and when one is cheerful, things normally maddening are of no moment.

Pro-life bill proposes ban on pills, IUD

THE PRO-CONTRACEPTIVE bill of Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman has found a new match.

If Lagmans Responsible Parenthood and Population Management Act of 2005 advocates the use of contraceptive drugs to reduce population, the recently filed House Bill 4643 or the Anti-Abortive Drugs and Devices Act of 2005 proposes the regulation of the “use, production, sale, distribution or dispensation of abortive drugs and devices.”

Campus security worsens

LIKE many students who were unwinding after the first semester ended, Nursing sophomore Jef Marty Longyapon, 18, and Hervika Pestaño, 20, a Nursing senior, decided to take a breather in a nearby mall. It was a simple date, but the couple never thought it was their last.

A master architect’s life chronicled in his own art

ALTHOUGH well known for his impressive architectural works such as the Manila Post Office and the Jones Bridge, Juan Arellano was also the first modernist painter in the Philippines. And with Drawing Spaces, the third exhibit arranged by his family since his death, Arellano’s mastery of the arts assumes a different form.

The exhibit, on display at the Lopez Memorial Museum until April 8, chronicles Arellano’s life as a painter with over 80 of his works in canvas.

The story of the magi in a magical retelling

IT SEEMS the holidays are not yet over as Instituto Cervantes screened a post-Christmas animated film for the whole family.

Los Reyes Magos (The Three Wise Men) is a new version of the Biblical tale that has become a classic embodiment of Christ’s birth. Directed by Antonio Navarro, the 2003 film was distributed by United International Pictures–Spain in several parts of France and Spain.

Archi students, alumni win CCP design tilt

AFTER more than thirty years, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) complex is set to get a major facelift with a new redevelopment program that will best mesh arts and culture with the 21st century trends, and Thomasians figuring prominently in the bid to update the CCP’s look.

In a District Design Competition for the new Cultural Center District, the designs of a group of very young UST alumni architects and three UST student groups were chosen as blueprints for the redevelopment.

Remembering our Rectors

THE LIFE and times of the University’s Rectors are remembered and honored in an interactive multimedia exhibit titled Rectors Through the Years. On display from Jan. 16 to Feb. 10 at the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences, the exhibit is part of the University’s 395th anniversary celebration, and the documentation of the University’s history in preparation for its quadricentennial events on 2011.
