Traditional and contemporary elements fused in design show

INDUSTRIAL design that married the old and the new was the theme of New Olds: Design between Tradition and Innovation, an exhibit organized by the Goethe-Institut Manila or German Cultural Center at the Yuchengco Museum in Makati City from May 9 to June 6.

Curated by Volker Albus, the exhibit featured some 45 designers and design teams from Germany, Europe, the United States, and the Philippines. Some 60 works explored how contemporary artists worked with traditional elements.

Thomasians Gabriel Barredo and Dem Bitantes were represented in the exhibit.

Fragile

SHE RECEIVED another bouquet of flowers

along with a note—a declaration of love,

which she took with a familiar delight

at such affection people leave at her doorstep,

but it never made keeping them any easier.

Torn by their soft, delicate petals,

she hesitated

whether to put them in a vase or in the garden

before the leaves run dry,

so she could save them from the weeds, her hands.

Lifespan

TOMORROW

is a space and time that I do not know.

It is easier predicting the lifespan

of things—how long 'till

a carton of milk expires or how fast

bananas age with spots.

But the warmth of a hand in mine

or the lingering wetness of a kiss

never wanes.

It just stays,

even when the hand has already died

and the lips have long dried.

UST rises to 141st in Asian rankings

ASIA'S PONTIFICAL University jumped to 141st from 150th in this year's ranking of top Asian universities, after recording its lowest standing in five years in 2013, data from British consultancy Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS) showed.

With a score of 42.4, UST trailed behind state-run University of the Philippines, which climbed four notches to 63rd (58.70 points). Meanwhile, Jesuit-led Ateneo de Manila slid to 115th (46.4) from last year's No. 109.

UST bested De La Salle University of the Christian Brothers, which remained in the 151-160 bracket.

Science professor receives DOST award for notable chemistry work

A UST professor’s research on composite materials for energy storage has won for her a top government award.

Christina Binag, a resident researcher at the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, was awarded for her significant contributions in the field of electro-synthesis of materials and conducting polymers, surface characterization, and nanomaterials during the 2013 Ten Outstanding Researchers Award of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)—National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) in their annual General Membership Assembly last March 26.

Employers still prefer graduates from ‘Big Four’ RP universities

FROM the Freshmen Walk to ceremonial exit at the Arch of the Centuries and everything that comes in between, nothing compares to the Thomasian experience.

But the real test comes outside of UST, in the real world: Are Thomasian graduates ready?

“You are now empowered to make your dream a reality and [with you] having a good Thomasian education, we believe that you can face the challenges of today’s world,” Father Rector Herminio Dagohoy, OP told this year's 8,236 graduates during the Bacalaureate Mass last March 21.

Graduates said they felt mixed emotions.
