UST alumnus wins GSIS art prize

TWO Thomasian artists emerged victorious in the recent Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Art Competition at Pasay City last June 24.

Jesus Santos’ “The Unseen Beauty Beyond Poverty” bested 294 pieces in the representational category. He also won last year’s grand prize in the same category with his entry, “Kanlungan.”

Santos used dark colors such as brown and gray to portray the depression brought by poverty. He used the rule of thirds to place a subject behind a more vibrantly colored and light-infused background to break the monotony of the composition.

Norma Miraflor leaves Available Light

WRITERS and friends paid tribute to the late writer-editor Norma Miraflor last June 22 at the UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies.

Miraflor, at one time editorial director of the Singaporean publishing firm MPH and a highly successful editor with an international reputation, passed away last summer in Australia, where she had been partly based with her husband. journalist Ian Ward.

The cause of her death was not officially known, although friends said she was suffering from breast cancer. Still others said she died of a massive stroke shortly after arriving in Australia from heat-choked Manila. She was in her mid-sixties.

Poor Souls at Sea

LEO BOBADILLA lived a simple life. He was a fisherman living in a rundown shack near the shore of Santa Filomena, Romblon who would rise every day at 2 A.M. to let his net trap sleeping fishes. This, along with the responsibility of raising and tending to his sickly seven-year-old daughter, was his life. His wife had left him five years ago, choosing to marry a rich man from the city.

For someone like Leo, the early morn was a call for his thin downbeat body. Lying on a rough tattered mat that lied on the cold floor, he woke up to massage his poor daughter’s back. This was the third time that she was wheezing and coughing blood. His heart broke as he saw his daughter’s twitching eyes as she bore the pain in her chest.

Leo’s heart sank.

Thomasians dominate Pharmacy boards

THE University once again dominated the June 2013 Pharmacy licensure examinations, with six Thomasians entering the Top 10.

Data from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) showed that 293 out of 365 Thomasians made the cut this year, or an 80.2-percent passing rate. This was lower than last year’s 88.92 percent, with 281 passers out of 316 examinees.

UST emerged as this year’s third top-performing school. Last year it was second.

Leading the new batch of Thomasian pharmacists is Clinical Pharmacy summa cum laude Ryan Justin Raynes, who ranked second with a 93.65-percent score.

UST appeals ruling in favor of Selegna

A MANILA Trial Court has sided with the private firm operating the carpark in a financial row with UST, prompting the University administration to file an appeal to overturn what it thinks is a “glaringly erroneous” ruling.

Presiding Judge Paulino Gallegos of the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 47 on Jan. 29 ordered defendant UST to pay Selegna Holdings Corp. P186 million representing revenue losses supposedly caused by deviations from a 15-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract.

“Defendant UST is hereby directed to strictly comply with the terms and conditions of the contract on the yearly escalation of the parking fee covered by the BOT,” the decision stated.

Freshmen get early welcome

The freshman batch of 2013 got a welcome rite they would never forget, less than a week after stepping inside UST at the start of Academic Year 2013-2014.

Wearing masks, face paint and carrying their college colors, thousands of first-year students marched around the campus and passed through the Arch of the Centuries to the drumbeat of the UST Yellow Jackets last June 7.

This tradition enables freshmen to connect with UST’s 402-year-old history, Secretary General Fr. Winston Cabading, O.P. said in an interview.

Cabading said that unlike in previous years, the “Thomasian Welcome Walk” was held earlier to avoid heavy rains.
