Oct. 23 2016, 12:10 pm. – SOCIOLOGIST Clarence Batan of the Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets) was elected president of the Philippine Sociological Society last Oct. 7.

Batan graduated from UST in 1995 with a degree in sociology. He obtained his master’s degree in sociology from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, and a doctorate degree from Dalhousie University under a scholarship grant from the Canadian government.

Batan said he would integrate undergraduate students into the society. “We’re really few, but by bringing in undergraduate and graduate students into the organization, a new generation of would-be sociologists would give us the chance to further develop the program for them,” Batan told the Varsitarian.

Batan plans to improve the quality of research submitted to the Philippine Sociological Review through a series of lectures in different schools.

“For me, sociology is a colonial implant. My hope is that we could do more sociology for the Filipinos. We could actually evolve into sosyolohiyang Pilipino,” he said.

Batan, who also teaches at the UST Graduate School, is the director of the UST Research Center on Culture, Education, and Social Issues.
