MAHALAGANG magkaroon ng simbahan para sa mahihirap. Ito ang tinalakay ni Obispo Teodoro Bacani, Jr. DD sa isang seminar tungkol sa mga layunin ng Plenary Council of the Philippines II sa Aula Magna, Faculty of Sacred Theology noong Agosto 24.
Sang–ayon sa Vision-Mission statement ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines sa plenary assembly ng mga obispo noong Hulyo 23, 1992, inihayag niya ang kahalagahan ng simbahan sa Pilipinas.
“Immersed in a society fragmented by divided conflicts and afflicted by widespread poverty, yet deeply aspiring, we as Church in the Philippines, with total trust in God’s love, envision ourselves as the community of disciples, who firmly believe in the Lord Jesus and joyfully live in harmony and solidarity with one another, with creation and with God,” paliwanag niya.
Ayon kay Bacani, mahalaga ang pagiging isang komunidad ng mga disipulo ni Kristo. Upang maisakatuparan ito, kinakailangang maging isang simbahan para sa mahihirap.
“There is a big gap between the rich and the poor within the Church itself. If that gap is not bridged, the gap remains and we will have a divided Church,” wika niya.
“The great challenge of PCP II–community of disciples, church of the poor, renewed integral evangelization–are not obligations or projects we impose on ourselves, rather they are deep of newness and fullness of life offered to our Church and people by the God of people,” dagdag pa ni Bacani.
Nagpulong muli ang mga obispo, kasama ang kaparian, at lay people sa San Carlos Pastoral Complex noong Enero 27 upang gumawa ng huling pahayag hinggil sa mga layunin ng PCP II.
Idiniin ni Bacani ang kahalagahan ng pagkakaroon ng simbahan para sa maralita dahil sa mahirap ang karamihan sa naninirahan sa bansa at layunin ng simbahan na mabawasan ang mga mahihirap.
Sa kanyang pahayag, sinabi niyang kailangang kilalanin at sundin si Kristo upang maging isang disipulo. “The Church happens only where there is a community of disciples of Christ,” dugtong pa ni Bacani.
Kailangan ding magkaroon ng pananampalataya at bigyang-halaga ang mga katangian ng pananampalatayang ito ayon sa konteksto ng mga Filipino.
“Kilala ko si Kristo at kinikilala ko siya,” aniya. Sa pamamagitan ng personal na relasyon kay Kristo, magkakaroon din ng ugnayan sa Ama at Espiritu Santo. Anna Rachelle S. Ariola
