IN RECOGNITION of his heroic deed, former Faculty of Civil Law student Hanz Paolo Lopez received a posthumous award from the University last July 10. Vice-Rector Fr. Juan Ponce, O.P. and Secretary-General Fr. Winston Cabading, O.P. gave the special plaque of recognition to his mother Lourdes Lopez, UST Publishing House marketing director.
A graduate of AB Major in Economics, Lopez, 24, died of electrocution after saving sisters Jastin and Maria Joan Turian from an exposed electrical wire submerged in flood waters in front of Lopez’s computer shop on the corner of Sisa and Dapitan Sts. last July 4. He was immediately brought, along with the Turian sisters, to the UST Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
The Turian sisters survived with minor injuries. (see related story on page 7)
“Aming ipinagdadasal ay sana mabigyan ng hustisya ang nangyari kay Hanz. Sana ay ma-solusyunan na ang ganitong pangyayari, nang ‘di na ito maulit,” Hanz’s mother told the Varsitarian.
Lopez’s body was cremated last July 12. John Patrick D. Padilla
