THE DEPARTMENT of General Education (Gen Ed) is set to establish three sub-departments by next semester to improve the management of general education courses.

According to Gen Ed Director Dr. Nancy Eleria, the establishment of the proposed departments would reduce the micromanagement.

She explained that the Gen Ed director alone cannot oversee the effective implementation of all general education programs. The new departments—Languages, History and Social Sciences, and Humanities and Literature—will now be tasked to keep an eye on the standardization of general education courses’ curricula, she said.

Eleria said the creation of the three departments was approved by the Committee of Deans and the Academic Senate last year. Once the budget is approved, the departments can begin to operate.

Meanwhile, Eleria also said the Gen Ed Department might soon occupy the bigger office of the defunct Faculty Association of the University of Santo Tomas to remedy space problems that affected its operations.

“The University-wide committee members also have other administrative positions. This is a constraint since they are not working full-time under one office,” Eleria said.

Aside from the three, a Department of Math and Natural Sciences was also proposed but Eleria said the department is yet to standardize Math and Science curricula, leading to the shelving of the proposal. Edsel Van D.T. Dura
