THOMASIANS were again recognized as responsible media practitioners during the 27th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium of the Yuchengco Tower in Makati City last Oct. 24.
For the third consecutive year, Inter Nos (Latin for “among us”), the official student publication of the Faculty of Sacred Theology, bagged the best student organ in the college division.
Inter Nos editor in chief Emmanuel Contreras told the Varsitarian that the publication promotes progress in the Church and in the society.
“The publication does not only cater to the CMMA requirements, but we think that the values it promotes are also important for us (staff) who are, in a way, ‘co-formators’ to other seminarians,” Contreras said.
Meanwhile, former Varsitarian Filipino editor and now Advertising guru Ramon Osorio’s column “Commoness”, published every Wednesday in the Philippine Star, won its second best business column award since 2002. Osorio, who was an Outstanding Thomasian Alumnus honoree in 2002, graduated from UST with a degree in Communication Arts in 1974 and finished his master’s degree in Business Administration in 1979 at the Ateneo de Manila University. He has been teaching in the Artlets for 22 years.
On the other hand, poet Nerisa del Carmen Guevarra’s “Reaching Destination” received a special citation for the secular album category. Guevarra finished B.S. Biology in UST in 1993 and teaches Literature in Artlets.
The CMMA was established in 1978 by the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin to recognize media practitioners who excel not only according to the technical standards of their work, but also promote moral principles and positive values. It started including a student category in 2001.
