Resign now, Madame President!

Geiger counter - an instrument for detecting ionizing radiation. It consists of a thin central wire carrying positive charge, surrounded by a concentric circular conducting cylinder carrying an equal negative charge.

I am a no political activist.

At least not the kind that infests Mendiola and Welcome Rotonda with placards and curses, and seeks to unseat every Malacañang occupant—but maybe this time, I will, unless President Macapagal Arroyo voluntarily resigns.

Impeach rather than make useless noise

SENATOR Aquilino Pimentel is one funny guy. His charming expletives against GMA do not fail to make me laugh.

One of his latest, when asked what he thought of the CBCP statement: “Appeals to conscience are good under normal circumstances, not when the person concerned doesn’t appear to have one. How does one ask Idi Amin or a Saddam or a Mugabe to examine his conscience?”

Waste management

THROWING a candy wrapper into the wastebasket may be the most trivial thing you do (some don’t even bother to throw them in a disposal bin). But the candy wrapper may hold a few dirty secrets about you.

Such is garbology, the study of a society—its behavior, lifestyle or culture (and dirty secrets)—through its garbage. And, boy, do I have some interesting hypotheses about the Thomasian lifestyle!

Although I am no expert garbologist, and my inferences are merely half-guesses—unintelligent—I went around the campus trying to study its garbage heaps.

Ed Tech, Music hold workshop

IN AN attempt to break new ground in music technology among Philippine universities, the Conservatory of Music (Music) will hold a two-month digital audio workshop starting July 18 at the Educational Technology (Ed-Tech) Center in the UST Central Library.

Catalyst of solidarity

WHILE magazines and websites are entertaining and informative, they could also serve as a gateway to Catholic unity.

These contemporary resources reinvigorate Catholicism through interactive content like interesting topics with creative illustrations.

This growing novelty has earned popularity and has been adopted by many Catholic organizations.

Cool and Catholic

JUST when you thought there has been a lack of entertaining youth-oriented Christian materials since the Super Book and Flying House became defunct, look around and you’d be surprised to find a variety of magazines, websites, and books which provide spiritual guidance to the youth without losing their aesthetic value and entertainment appeal.

These youth-oriented resources are dedicated to nourishing the teenagers’ relationship with Christ through helpful articles and other features which have been especially conceptualized with the youth’s taste and interests in mind.

Thomasian develops detection method for bacterial toxins

A THOMASIAN alumna has developed a cost-effective method for detecting food-borne bacterial toxins.

Philippine American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE) researcher Dr. Marjorie Medina said latex agglutination assay, an economic form of detecting antigens, can be used to visually detect toxins.

Big bang secrets to be revealed

EVER wonder what the universe was like a split second after the big bang? You just might know in 2007.

According to Newscientist, the Centre Etudes et Recherche Nucleaire (CERN), the European Centre for Particle Physics near Geneva, is nearing the completion of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a 27-kilometer cylinder laid 100 meters underground straddling the French and Swiss borders that will smash protons into each other with a collision energy of 14 teraelectronvolts—almost as powerful as a nuclear explosion.

Thomasian doctor wins US prize

TOO MUCH thyroid hormone can cause maternal risks, a new research shows.

According to Dr. Maria Honolina Gomez and Dr. Mary Flor Gafate of the UST Hospital (USTH) Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism, hyperthyroidism, too much thyroxin in a pregnant woman’s body is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Thyroid hormones are responsible for body metabolism, growth, and development.
