FOR THE second consecutive year, the UST Publishing House (USTPH) was awarded Publisher of the Year by the Manila Critics Circle during the 24th National Book Awards last Sept. 4 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

“When you say ‘winner’, you are producing quality books,” USTPH Director Mecheline Manalastas told the Varsitarian. “We had six award recipients out of 11, the most number of award recipients among the publishers.”

Itinatag ang UST Symphonic Band, na mas kilala noon bilang UST-ROTC Band, bago pa man sumiklab ang Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig. Muli itong binigyan ng buhay pagkatapos ng digmaan ng isang nagngangalang Maestro Bautista ng Philippine Constabulary. Sa pamumuno ni Col. Jose Campana sa loob ng halos 20 taon, lalong nakilala ang banda at naging isa sa pinakamahusay na bandang pang-unibersidad sa buong Maynila. Sa pamumuno naman ni Prop. Romeo Verayo na pumalit kay Campana, tumanggap ang banda ng mga babaeng miyembro sa unang pagkakataon.

THE UST Publishing House launched its second set of titles for the year last Dec. 11 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex auditorium. The launching is in line with its “400 books for UST’s 400th” project, which seeks to release 40 new titles annually for 10 years until 2011, when the University marks its 400th year.

The titles launched were:

Pinarangalan ng Manila Critics’ Circle sa 23rd National Book Awards ang USTPH bilang “Publisher of the Year 2003,” noong Agosto 14 sa World Trade Center sa Pasay.

AN AWARD-WINNING Thomasian writer launched his first Filipino novel which he claimed “a timely contribution to the often erratic and unproductive field of Philippine long fiction” last July 15 at the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies (UST-CCWS).

UST-CCWS senior associate Cirilo Bautista’s “Galaw ng Asoge” tackles the 1965 presidential election and its effects on the members of the Ortiz family, the protagonists in the story.

“(My latest novel) will change the direction of the Tagalog novel in the near future,” Bautista said.

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas Publishing House, Asia’s oldest existing press, launched 20 titles at the UST Thomas Aquinas Research Complex auditorium last Dec. 10.

The launching was in connection with the UST press’ “400 books for UST’s 400th” project, which seeks to release 40 new titles every year for 10 years until 2011, when UST marks its 400th anniversary as Asia’s oldest university. The first 20 titles for this year were launched last September during the Philippine Bookfair at SM Megamall.

The titles included:

PURSUANT to the University’s 2011 quadri-centennial celebrations, the UST Publishing House launched the first 20 titles of some 40 books set for publication this year during the 13th Philippine Bookfair at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall last September 7.

According to UST Publishing House director Mecheline Manalastas, this is the second batch of the 40 books to be published annually until UST’s 400th anniversary in 2011. It is a project of UST Rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. dubbed “400 books for UST’s 400th”.

IN PREPARATION for UST’s quadri-centennial celebration in 2011, the UST Publishing House launched 40 book titles during the 12th Philippine Bookfair at SM Megamall last Sept. 9.

According to Mecheline Manalastas, UST Publishing House director, the University aims to publish 400 books in the next 10 years for UST’s 400th anniversary.

“With the launching of 40 titles, the University aims to encourage the Thomasian community to write research works, educational books, and literary works as well,” said Manalastas.
