‘Thomasians should emulate Aquinas’

EDUCATION without wisdom is nothing.

In his homily during the Concelebrated Mass for the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas last Jan. 27, Bishop Jacinto Jose of Urdaneta, Pangasinan emphasized the importance of wisdom in strengthening the University’s teachings.

“Education is a tool so that one may be able to know, but wisdom would be the faculty and the need of the spirit to know and follow what is good and to recognize and avoid evil,” he said.

Education he said, might lead one “out of ignorance,” but wisdom could help a person accumulate knowledge and skills, guided by reason.

‘Wicked’ enjoys successful Manila run

The Manila run of the international touring production of the Broadway musical hit, Wicked, is ending March 9 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, but Filipinos can’t seem to get enough of it. Extended for almost a month, the production has enjoyed brisk ticket sales and discussions should be rife on what makes it work.

Wicked tells of the friendship between a green-skinned witch named Elphaba and the popular “good witch” named Glinda. Elphaba is a rebel who tries to rebel against the Wizard of Oz, while Glinda would rather concede to the norms.

The race

THE DAY of the race came.

The townspeople stopped working and hunting, leaving their homes to watch the regularly anticipated race.

Spectators started filling the square. One by one, the competing animals made their way to the starting point.

The rabbit entered elegantly.

She was not new to racing and was confident, knowing that she would win because she always did, thus, earning her the moniker “little cloud.”

Slow and passive, the turtle struggled his way to the beginning of the race. He was the runt of the litter, the smallest in his family, and also the slowest in the kingdom. His entrance drew jeers and mockery from the crowd. But the turtle did not yield as he was already used to it.

Understanding the readers is key to a good publishing career

WHAT’S the key to a successful publishing career?

It is to think of the readers and not monetary rewards, said Visprint Inc. Publishing Manager Nida Ramirez in the fourth instalment of the USTingan, a roundtable discussion on issues about writing and publishing organized by the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies.

“Awards should not be the aim when we publish a book. It should always be the story and whether the readers are going to like it or not,” Ramirez said, adding that branding the book and the author is very important nowadays.

“Publishing is not just about finding a good story, you have to be distinguishable from the rest,” she said.

Shadow

There looms your death,

your uncertainty, your fickleness.

He expands on the ground

but never really strays

from where

your feet tread.

Isn’t it odd

That this ghost only appears

With the light?

You will run,

and try to escape him

but you never will

because he is always

right behind you.
