Rocking the world with God’s greatness

WITH rowdy, rebellious themes, rock music has undeniably attracted a cult following among the youth with its heavy guitar riffs, loud vocals, fast-paced tempos, and rebellious lyrics.

But Christian rock, in itself a “rebellion to the rebellion,” uses the same head-banging sounds to bring God’s life-turning messages of love, salvation and inspiration to the youth. It presents a rebellion against rock’s established themes of casual sex, drugs, anarchy, violence, and evil.

Rock on, live on

ROCK stars are often stereotyped as drugged and suicidal, who are fond of playing songs that serenade death. But pro-lifers are changing that beat, claiming the rock stage to celebrate life.

In its fight against abortion, infanticide, contraception, euthanasia, and other anti-life advocacies, the American Life League (ALL) has formed an organization of different Christian rock artists to integrate pro-life messages in their music.

Blueprint for success

WHAT do the Thomas Aquinas Research Center (TARC), Beato Angelico Building (Beato) and the Benavides Cancer Institute (BCI) have in common?

Apart from being the three major infrastructures put up by the University of late, these buildings were designed by one female architect.

Meet Yolanda David-Reyes, a Thomasian whose architectural philosophy blends modern, classic and natural architecture.

Leading lady

Francisco Doplon’s logo rhythm

THE CONTOURS of the beautiful Signal hills in Marawi city mesmerized Francisco “Dopy” Doplon as a kid. At first, his doodles were no better than others his age. Nobody appreciated his sketches until he was 10 when his family and friends praised him for his rendition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

From then on, he has never stopped drawing and growing in the arts. He even entered the University of Santo Tomas for training.

De Quiros: ‘Write what you know about’

YOU CANNOT write what you don’t read.

Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) columnist Conrado de Quiros reminded Thomasians to read regularly to gain ideas on what to write and to learn the different writing styles of writers.

“If you do not read, you would not be able to write,” De Quiros said in his “The Rub on Writing” lecture organized by Journalese, the official newsletter of the Journalism Society, last Aug. 23 at the audio-visual room in St. Raymund’s Bldg.

Cancer care at its finest

FOR MANY cancer patients, being shifted from one clinic to another or from one country to another for treatment is like a slow but sure death.

The UST Hospital has the hardships of cancer patients in mind always when it completed its P350-million Benavidez Cancer Institute (BCI), the latest addition to its five-year redevelopment and expansion program.

Overworked yet fortunate

THE recent on-campus theft incident in which an Artlets professor lost his laptop computer to a working scholar has drawn varied reactions. Some cannot help but think deeply of the student’s reasons for committing such an action.

Alumni need tribute, not tarps

WHENEVER I see the tarpaulins for Michael Vincent Uy, our Architecture graduate who was one of the Ten Most Outstanding Students of the Philippines, hanging around UST, I cannot help but think if the University has done enough to honor its distinguished alumni besides issuing streamers.
