UST, sa tatlong ‘saling-wika’
SA LOOB ng halos apat na dantaon ng Unibersidad, tatlo ang wika na nagsilbing katuwang nito sa pagpapalaganap ng kaalaman sa iba’t ibang larangan.
Sa pagsakop ng Espanya sa Pilipinas, naging Español ang kauna-unahang wika na ginamit sa mga kurso sa UST. Dahil dito, nakamit ng Unibersidad ang titulong Royal University na iginawad ni Haring Charles III ng Espanya noong 1785. Ang wikang ito ay ginamit sa buong UST hanggang 1920.
Still ROTC, whether you like it or not?
THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas led the University Belt Consortium in calling for the abolition of the Reserved Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. But in adopting this semester only the Military Training Service (MTS), the military component of the National Service Training Program (NSTP), the new law that defangs the ROTC and makes it optional, the University has been forced to eat its words.
Robbery of the Centuries
A COLLEGE of Science senior was held up inside her friend’s car last Sept. 10 at around 3 p.m. near the Arch of the Centuries.
According to the UST Office for Security Affairs report, the victim, who asked not to be identified, was sleeping on the driver’s seat of her friend’s blue Honda Civic parked along Tamayo Drive when she felt someone sat beside her.
When she woke up, an unidentified man told her to drive the car around the campus because of the security guard’s alleged order.
CRS celebrates college week
IN CELEBRATION of its 28th college week last Sept.4-6, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) held a student forum entitled “Kakaibang Kaalaman,” last September 4 at the Medicine Auditorium.
The forum discussed the social and psychological implications of technology like cellular phones and the Internet on the academic performance of students with Secretary General Fr. Winston Cabading, O.P. and Faculty of Arts and Letters Armando de Jesus, Ph.D. as panelists.
Sustainable development through sci-tech
THE PHILIPPINE Association for the Advancement of Science (PhilAAS) held its 51st annual convention with the theme, “Sustainable Development Through Science and Technology: Networking for Environmental Quality,” at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC) last September 13-14.
Faculty of Pharmacy nixes drug-dispensing doctors
THE FACULTY of Pharmacy voiced its opposition to the Medical Bill of 2002, which allows doctors to dispense drugs.
Pharmacy Dean Dr. Rosalinda Solevilla led the Faculty in submitting the position paper to Sen. Tessie Oreta, author of the bill.
The paper pointed out the distinct role of pharmacists and cited existing rules such as Administrative Order No. 62, Sec 1-3, which states that, “dispensing is the act by a validly registered pharmacist of filling a prescription or doctor’s order on the patient’s chart.”
Tracking the medical apartheid
THE ROAD to the generic drugs acceptability is strewn with a number of obstructions.
According to the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD), barely 40 percent of consumers comply with the Generics Act.
The Generics Act or Republic Act 6675 is “an act to promote, require and ensure the production of an adequate supply, distribution, use and acceptance of drugs and medicines identified by their generic names.” It was enacted to provide the masses with access to cheap and quality medicines.
Seminar gives light on social security
THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters (AB) and the AB Student Council in cooperation with the Social Security System, hosted a seminar dubbed as “Securing Your Future with SSS,” last Sept. 3 at the CME Auditorium, St. Martin de Porres Bldg.
In line with SSS’ 45th founding anniversary, the symposium’s theme was “Ikaw at ang SSS: Magtulungan para sa Matatag na Kinabukasan.”
Manuel Ramon Amanse, Jr., council president, said the forum satisfied inquiries from the students about the investment and conservation of SSS.
Forum tackles economic journalism
THE SUNRISE industry of economic journalism and business reporting was the focus of a forum organized by the UST Journalism Society (JournSoc) and the Artlets Economics Society (AES) last Sept. 6 at the audio-visual room of the Faculty of Arts and Letters.
In “Show Me The Money: A Seminar on Business Journalism,” Raul Dancel, Philippine Daily Inquirer business section senior writer, and Rodwin Oloresisimo, UST Social Research Center publishing consultant and editor, tackled the best practices of business reporting.
CBA dispute now with Court of Appeals
AFTER Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas denied its motion for reconsideration last July, the Samahang Manggagawa ng UST (SM-UST) will elevate the case to the Court of Appeals.
SM-UST vice president Nilo Tampos said the Union would file a petition for certiorari on or before September 19.
A petition for certiorari asks a higher court to reverse or modify a decision of a tribunal, board or officer.
