State of cinema discussed

TO TACKLE current issues on art and commercialism in Philippine cinema, the Humanities and Literature Department of the Faculty of Arts and Letters conducted the first of a series of lectures last August 28 at the Audio-Visual Room of the St. Raymund’s Building.

Artlet stabbed in Quiapo

A COMMUNICATION Arts junior was stabbed by an unidentified man after she refused to hand over her bag last August 26 at around 12 noon inside a jeepney parked along Quezon Boulevard in Quiapo.

The victim, Maila Bonaverte, said she was alone in the jeepney, waiting for it to be filled when a man, suspectedly intoxicated on drugs, went in and sat across from her. When Bonaverte opened her bag to get fare, the man tried to grab her bag, but the victim refused. The man then stabbed her right side but fled empty-handed.

Thomasian wins in Petron art tilt

A THOMASIAN won first place in the “Art Petron: The 2nd National Student Art Competition” last Aug. 23 at the Petron Mega Plaza, Makati City.

With the theme “Lumang Galing, Bagong Sining,” the entries in oil and watercolor depicted age-old Filipino crafts and skills handed down through generations.

College of Fine Arts and Design Advertising Arts senior Mark Ramsel Salvatus III landed first in the oil painting category for his work “Balwarte ni Lolo, Ang Aming Munting Kastilyo.”

Labor chief calls for unity

LABOR Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas urged the different non-government organizations (NGO’s) to help the government instead of accusing it of neglecting overseas Filipino workers (OFW).

“Let us not point at anybody. Instead let us work together to solve the problem at hand,” Sto. Tomas said.

Fr. Lana still ACUP president

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas Rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. was re-elected president of the Association for Catholic Universities of the Philippines (ACUP) during its general assembly and president’s forum last August 14 at the Ateneo de Manila University.

According to Giovanna Fontanilla, ACUP secretary general and UST executive assistant to the Secretary General, the board of directors representing the 29 member schools voted for the extension of Fr. Lana’s presidency for another three years.

Bar-ops seeks more support

DESPITE efforts to regain UST’s “lost glory in the bar examinations,” the Faculty of Civil Law Student Council’s (CLSC) has failed to solicit financial support from the UST administration for its bar operations (bar-ops).

According to CLSC president and bar operations committee chief Edgardo Banaag, the University has not shelled out a single centavo to help the student council since the bar-ops started three years ago. He said the funding from the bar-ops come from alumni donations, the student council fee, and fund-raising projects by the CLSC.

Science targets ‘zero’

TO IMPROVE the faculty profile, newly appointed College of Science Dean Fortunato Sevilla III started implementing last month “Zero B.S. by 2004,” a program that will require the College’s faculty to have at least a master’s degree.

According to Sevilla, who is also the assistant to the rector for office of research, the program is a continuation of the former dean’s projects and part of the Rector’s goal on faculty qualification and improve-ment.

Imaginative mood in writing history

HOW MANY of us have gone through school memorizing names, dates, and places in history books? How many of us sat through those history classes where in just a few minutes we would be looking at our watches wishing that it be over soon? How many of us, students and professors, treated history like it was a law or medicine subject where every fact on every page of a textbook must be remembered?
