I TRAVELED to places I never expected to go to. I treaded roads that were either smooth or rough and at times, I got myself distracted along the way. But wherever I end up, I always go back to where I started my journey.

Sports is the very reason I was led into writing. It is my comfort zone where I feel safe and I become best despite obstacles, denials and other challenges.

It is in playing, watching and writing about sports that I learned lessons that were not taught inside the classroom. Most people would regard sports strictly as a physical world but behind the action-packed games are precious and enriching learning experiences that give meaning to one’s existence.

By watching baseball, I learned that trust plays a vital role in making decisions just as a pitcher needs to trust his teammates’ line of defense when his own defense fails at the mound.

I learned how to fight for right and reasonable causes just as a coach fights for every unfair call whistled by the referee. I learned that great things are achieved through hardwork and determination just as the athletes spend grueling hours in training, get all-dirty diving for the ball, and come out toasted under the heat of the sun on top of pressures posed by academics.

It is also sports that taught me winning is not everything. It is learning from errors and recovering from lapses that makes an athlete a true winner.

As a daughter, student, V writer and editor, I would have not gained these insights if not for the people who steered me to the right direction.

To Sir Lito, you challenged me to do better in all my endeavors. I know you will continue to inspire young writers to reach their full potential. Thank you! The same goes to Sir Ipe who has been consistent in pointing out my mistakes to help me grow as a writer.

To the Fantastic Sports team — Emil, Paul D. and Heinz, my first year in the Varsitarian would not have been fruitful and memorable without you. I wish you luck as you walk the path you choose to take.

To the V-Sports girls — Jem and Aki, thank you for bearing with me in the past year. Take to heart all the things you learned and will learn. They can bring you to good places. Jem, I believe that you can bring the Sports section to greater heights.

To the incumbent staff — thank you for the brief bonding moments I had with you. I know that you can hurdle all obstacles in the next publication year.

To the outgoing V batch — Nikki, Raydon Jaycee, Joyce, Joseinne, Sam, Roman, Levine, Aura, Matt, Samboy, Carlo, Kuya Tonying, FJ, Ian, Jet, Alexa, Eds, and Agnes I spent less time with you but those treasured moments were a lot of fun. I look forward to crossing paths with you in the years to come.

To my editors — Ate Nascel, Kuya Tonying, Kuya Ketch and Levine, thank you for teaching me how to deal with challenges in true Thomasian fashion. I hope I did not disappoint you in the past two years.

To the Oreos, my college barkada, thank you for cheering me up when I’m stressed because of academics and extra-curricular activities. I was able to hold my ground because of your support.

Special thanks to the people from IPEA particularly Fr. Ermito de Sagon, O.P. and Sir Mike Silbor, for assisting the Varsitarian in our sports coverages.

To the Thomasian athletes, thank you for inspiring me to work hard in order to achieve my goals. Continue to be the best in your respective fields.

To my family, especially to my mom, who never gets tired of encouraging me to reach for my dreams, thank you! I’m sorry for missing a lot of get-togethers and for going home late all the time.

And to God, the Giver of life, thank you for laying out a beautiful plan for me.

Once a V staffer, always a V staffer!
