THE VARSITARIAN, in its 86 years of existence as UST’s premier chronicler, has produced big names in various fields, some of whom became National Artists—F. Sionil Jose, Bienvenido Lumbera, and J. Elizalde Navarro.
Many sterling names in Philippine journalism were V staffers such as Teodoro Valencia, Joe Guevarra, Felix Bautista, Jose Bautisa, Joe Burgos, Jullie Yap-Daza, Rina Jimenez-David, Neal Cruz, Alice Colet Villadolid, and Eugenia Duran-Apostol among others.
The titans of Philippine literature learned writing in the Varsitarian: Bienvenido Lumbera, F. Sionil José, Celso Al Carunungan, Ophelia Alcantara-Dimalanta, Paz Latorena, Cirilo Bautista, Federico Licsi Espino, Wilfrido Nolledo, Rogelio Sicat, Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, Norma Miraflor, Eric Gamalinda and Vim Nadera.
Varsitarian alumni also distinguished themselves in public service and in other fields. There are the late Manila Mayor Arsenio H. Lacson, the late Manila Archbishop Artemio Casas, former Vice-president Emmanuel Pelaez, the late Sorsogon Gov. Juan Frivaldo, Sen. Francisco Tatad, and former Philippine Medical Association president Dr. Vicente Rosales, Sr.

The Varsitarian is now accepting applicants for the publication year 2014-2015. Deadline of submission of requirements is on February 7, 2014.
WRITERS: Applicants for writing positions will undergo qualifying and specialized exams (dates to be announced after the deadline). Optional: Applicants may submit at least two (2) works published in print or online.
Enclose all documents in a clear blue slide folder.
ARTISTS:
Art section applicants must submit a portfolio consisting a hard copy of at least four (4) illustrations drawn using traditional media (submit the original or a colored copy), three (3) digital artworks, and one (1) layout sample (poster, magazine, newspaper spread, etc.)
Requirements must be printed must be printed on letter-sized paper and placed in a clear pink slide folder.
PHOTOGRAPHERS:
Photography applicants must submit an album consisting of 4R or 8R photos printed on good quality photo paper: Three (3) landscape photographs, two (2) portrait photographs, photo documentation of events inside and outside of UST, and a three-minute video showing life in University (to be put in a blank CD or DVD). Requirements must be mounted on letter-sized paper and placed in a clear green slide folder.
All applicants should be at least first year students enrolled in any undergraduate program with at least 12 academic units, or in any graduate programs with at least 9 academic units. Enclose a copy of your latest registration form, temporary transcript of records, résumé, and an accomplished application form (to be obtained from the Varsitarian office, Rm. 105, Tan Yan Kee Student Center, UST, España, Manila) in a long brown envelope and submit to the Varsitarian office on or before FEBRUARY 7, 2014.
