But UST’s sports scene was not quiet. The Varsitarian looks back at its top sports stories of 2020.
EJ Laure makes UAAP return
EJ Laure returns to the Growling Tigresses and scores 17 points in a 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 20-25, 13-15 UST loss against NU.

UST mourns death of legendary coach
Coach Januario “Aric” del Rosario, who guided the UST Growling Tigers to four consecutive UAAP basketball titles in the 90s, dies on March 26 at 80 years old.

Season 82 prematurely ends
UAAP officially cancels on April 7 the remainder of Season 82, after the government announced the extension of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon.
Events affected by the cancellation are volleyball, football, athletics, baseball and softball.

UST champs of truncated season
UST wins its 44th UAAP general championship after amassing 2019 points in the season cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Tigers lose three key pieces in Rhenz Abando, Ira Bataller and Brent Paraiso as they transfer to Letran amid the ‘bubble’ controversy.

Ayo Out
UST Growling Tigers head coach Aldin Ayo announces his resignation on Sept. 4.
The University, a day after, accepts Ayo’s resignation.

UAAP slaps Ayo with indefinite ban
Ayo is banned “indefinitely” from the UAAP, the league’s board announces on Sept. 9.
According to the league board, Ayo “endangered the health and well-being of the student athletes under his charge when he conducted the training during a government-declared state of emergency.”

PNP clears Ayo
Almost a month after being banned from the UAAP indefinitely, Ayo is cleared by a Sorsogon City police of violation of the government’s health protocols.

UAAP signs contract with Cignal TV
The UAAP signs a 5.5-year broadcasting deal with CignalTV on Oct. 23 as long-time broadcasting partner ABS-CBN stopped operations in May.

UAAP suspends season 83
THE UAAP board on Dec. 11 announces it is pulling the plug on Season 83, citing the health and safety of student athletes as Covid-19 cases continued to rise.
The league’s board says it will study “the implications of the cancellation for the guidance of the member-schools and student-athletes.”
